Institute of Archaeology and Heritage
printThe Institute of Archeology and Heritage of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Primorska (UP FHŠ) was founded in January 2016, continuing the research path of the previous Institute for the Mediterranean Heritage, which operated within the Scientific and Research Center of the University of Primorska until the late 2015 . We are a multidisciplinary research group that co-ordinates and implements research in the fields of archeology and heritage, conducting national and international projects as well as developing the contents and programs of both scientific disciplines in the broadest meaning of the term.
doc. dr. Alenka Tomaž, Head of the institute
Who are we?
We are y young, successful research group combining creative potentials and research approaches from various scientific fields. We are engaged in research in the fields of archaeology ranging from the prehistoric period to the modern era; research goals are achieved through interdisciplinary cooperation of humanities and social sciences dealing in the heritage of times both past and present. We aim to bring together research findings that took shape in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, history, arts history, architecture, as well as more specific fields such as museology, conservation sciences, archive sciences and tourism.
Research is mainly related to the area of Slovenia, the Mediterranean basin, the Balkans and middle Europe in different periods of the past; most interest is invested into the processes that have contributed to the past shapings of cultural landscapes, contributing significantly to the present shape of the Slovenian area.
Achievements
The researchers of the IAH have conducted a series of basic scientific and applied research projects. As a leading partner or as a partner, the institute has implemented successfully a number of international projects in the field of cultural heritage and its protection/promotion. The oinstitute is also intensively involved in projects of preventive archeology, which it has managed to market with great success.
The institute members have published a number of scientific monographic publications, publications in domestic and foreign scientific journals, papers at international congresses and have organised numerous national as well as international scientific and professional meetings. The institute publishes the series of scientific monographs Annales Mediterranei.
The members of the institute perform teaching duties as members of the Department of Archeology and Heritage Studies in BA, MA and PhD levels, taking part in the program of Heritage Tourism at UP FTŠ as well.
Our Vision
